Due to variations in temperature and seasonal changes, there are numerous things that are affected in the human body which include metabolism, mood and even periods. It leaves one shell-shocked but seasonal changes affect not only the duration of the menstrual cycle but also the pain experienced by the menstruator. Even if weather does not have an adverse direct impact on the human body, it leads to numerous other changes due to which periods are affected.

Studies have proven that sunshine or the lack of it has a great impact on the length of one’s periods. When sunshine is present in abundance before ovulation, the ovarian activity increases drastically. The secretion of ‘Follicle Stimulating Hormone’ is increased which leads to the regulation of the reproductive functions of the human body. Therefore, one might ovulate less frequently during winters increasing the length of the menstrual cycle in summers. Limited sunshine affects the endocrine system due to which the thyroid is slowed down. As a result, the rate of metabolism is low and there are longer cycles since the body requires time to adapt to the drastically changing weather. When one transfers geographically to a place where the weather is hot or cold, the body doesn’t regulate automatically.

During the summer season, one spends time working out and this is the reason for decreased length of periods since more activity of the body leads to less cramps. During the winter season, blood vessels are constricted which leads to the interruption of blood flow during periods. Therefore, one can go through severe pain during this time. It is normal when there are fluctuations in the menstrual cycle due to variations in temperature. However, there are various other reasons for the same that include stress, medications, intensive exercise, changes in sleep cycle and many more. There are a number of external as well as internal factors that influence periods. With more and more research being done, more such factors are being discovered. What are the factors that influence your periods? Let us know in the comments below.
